Week 3 Blog- Functions of Sounds( Lion King)

Describe each of the three categories of sound:(dialogue, sound effects, music)

Dialogue: This is when the actors, or characters throughout the movie are talking and speaking to one another. This is a way for the characters in the movie to express feeling or emotions. This is also a way for the characters to hold a conversation.

Sound Effects: This type of sound, is found in movies when there is a sound needed that isn’t readily available, for example, say there is a movie where the sound of a train is needed, since many places you don’t hear the sound of a train anymore, there are clips of the sound of a train played to make it match up with the part of the movie. Another example of this is in The Lion King, where Mufsa roars at the hyenas when they have Simba cornered. This is an animated movie that has clips of a lion roaring, to make it realistic.

Music: Music is normally played at the beginning and end of movies. When there is a song played at the beginning of the movie, the same song is played at the end. An example of this is at the beginning of The Lion King when the song “The circle of life” is played. This song also plays at the end of the movie as well.

Explain how the different types of sound are used in your chosen film:

In the Lion King  all the different types of sound are used. At the beginning and end of the movie there is a song or music that is played. Throughout the movie there is also music. There are clips of the movie where there are sound effects used, like when Mufsa roars at the hyenas when they have Simba cornered. There is dialogue used when the characters are talking and making conversation.

Assess the impact of sound on the theme of the movie:

Sound  helps set the theme of the movie, by setting an overall tone of the movie. This helps make the viewer know what type of movie they are going to be watching, and what type of mood that the movie will put the viewer in.

Assess how the scene would play differently if you changed or removed a key sound:

If the element of dialogue were removed from movies it would completely change the whole movie. The movie would be hard to understand and would be less interesting.
