Week 3 Blog- Functions of Sounds( Lion King)

Describe each of the three categories of sound:(dialogue, sound effects, music)

Dialogue: This is when the actors, or characters throughout the movie are talking and speaking to one another. This is a way for the characters in the movie to express feeling or emotions. This is also a way for the characters to hold a conversation.

Sound Effects: This type of sound, is found in movies when there is a sound needed that isn’t readily available, for example, say there is a movie where the sound of a train is needed, since many places you don’t hear the sound of a train anymore, there are clips of the sound of a train played to make it match up with the part of the movie. Another example of this is in The Lion King, where Mufsa roars at the hyenas when they have Simba cornered. This is an animated movie that has clips of a lion roaring, to make it realistic.

Music: Music is normally played at the beginning and end of movies. When there is a song played at the beginning of the movie, the same song is played at the end. An example of this is at the beginning of The Lion King when the song “The circle of life” is played. This song also plays at the end of the movie as well.

Explain how the different types of sound are used in your chosen film:

In the Lion King  all the different types of sound are used. At the beginning and end of the movie there is a song or music that is played. Throughout the movie there is also music. There are clips of the movie where there are sound effects used, like when Mufsa roars at the hyenas when they have Simba cornered. There is dialogue used when the characters are talking and making conversation.

Assess the impact of sound on the theme of the movie:

Sound  helps set the theme of the movie, by setting an overall tone of the movie. This helps make the viewer know what type of movie they are going to be watching, and what type of mood that the movie will put the viewer in.

Assess how the scene would play differently if you changed or removed a key sound:

If the element of dialogue were removed from movies it would completely change the whole movie. The movie would be hard to understand and would be less interesting.

Week 2 Blog: Lion King

Identify the type of lighting used in the film(traditional three point. high-key, low- key):

The type of lighting that was used in the movie Lion King varies from scene to scene. There are parts of the movie that contain high- key and low- key lighting scenes. The movie is mainly done in high- key lighting, because the scenes in this animated movie are hardly ever dark and hard to see. There are scenes in the movie that are made to be dark, but it is in the scenes that are serious that add a serious tone to the movie, like when Mufsa dies.

Assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme:

1. What are the benefits to the style of lighting used?

A benefit to this style of lighting being used is that it  makes the movie easier to see and understand for group that the movie was meant for. Another benefit of this type of lighting style is that it shows that the movie is meant to be enjoyed but also has its serous points within the movie.

2. How did this technique contribute to the theme?

This technique of lighting style contributed to the theme of the movie, because in the movie it starts off as happy joyous occasion, and through out the movie there are serious points that make the movie have serious tone to it but at the end the movie goes back to the happy joyous moment. This technique of using bright style of lighting helps convey the message of the movie.

3. How was this lighting technique suited to the genre of the film?

This lighting technique is suited to the genre of the film, because most children’s movies are done and made to be bright so that the age group of that specific film can understand and see what is taking place during the movie. This also helps keeps the children’s attention during the movie. Animated movies are usually done in bright colors to catch the parents attention as well.

Compare how the scene would play if the different choices had been made:

Traditional three point lighting:

This would have given the movie a big twist. Traditional three point lighting is used in more of the old Western movies, that are meant to be in black and white. This lighting style would not have fit this type of movie, because it would have made it harder to understand and fully know what is going on in the movie. This would be hard for a child that is use to watching full colored movies to watch because most children are not use to watching movies in black and white anymore.

Low- Key Lighting:

This lighting style is used in some scenes of this movie, when the movie is at a serious point. If the whole movie was done in low key lighting it would make the movie a lot darker and would convey a completely different message then what it does.

After the battle is won Simbas takes his place as king.

[3. Discuss whether your film is presented chronologically or non-linearly.  In your discussion, address the following:
a. Was the film presented chronologically or non-linearly? How did this aesthetic choice contribute to the general effect on the audience?]

The movie is presented in chronologically, because this movie tells the life of Simba. It starts out as Simba as a cub, and progresses into Simbas adult life.

[ b. How are elements like character development or foreshadowing impacted by the choice of storytelling methods?]

By the story being presented in chronologically it helps show the life span of Simba and how things have changed over his life time, and how he goes from doubting himself to believing in himself and what he is suppose to do in his life.

[4. If the film had followed a different presentation style, how would the general effect on the audience have been different?]

Had the movie been presented in any other style it would have had a different effect on the whole movie and how the audience reacts to it. It would have less of an emotional impact on the film.
